Environmental Magazine

For this brief, I have been told to create two double page spreads for a fictional magazine called, Photography Now. The layouts should showcase your own photography on the Environment topic. The format of these pages is  200mm x 200mm per single page. I have decided to interpret Environment with weather, pollution. I think this will be a good place to start as there is a lot of pollution around where I live. I have started to come up with ideas of what I could include in my designs:

The power station is a main factor I will use in my project, this will have a lot of images of the power station as this is a large polluted area. I shall also look into technology that can also help the polluted earth; such as solar panels.

Transport is a big factor as well, as transport covers the most pollution from Britain with 33 million vehicles alone in England. This can also include noise pollution, although I have question marked this as I am not sure yet on how I can show noise pollution.

Finally waste and water pollution, this is making estuary's, and strands more dirty by people removing waste to areas where it is become more and more abandoned. This doesn't help with old boats chugging thought spiting petrol out into the water.

I am going to look at these points, and areas and photography them and place my own views about this in a magazine layout.

Research Images

I am researching on images that I will be taking pictures of for my magazine. I am looking at how the images have been taken, to try and give the full effect on to the picture of what that certain pollution is really like. These images will consist of Power Stations, Transport, Waste, and Water Pollution.

I really think this image works well showing all the pollution coming out from the power station as the smoke is thick, and the dirty gas covers the blue sky behind it. Also the Chimneys stand out from the black background, and look disgusting.

guardian.co.uk

This is another idea on what I can show in my environmental magazine. I can show horrible images of power stations, although edit them in a way that will make them look beautiful.

I also want to include images of transport, this can be any type of transport not only cars. Cars will be my main type of transport that I will focus on, as this is a large area of why there is so much pollution. I want to concentrate on the focus of the image, as if this is a target. I think this will be a interesting effect to the images, and can also show what is the most polluting vehicle in the image.

Research - Environmental Images

almostwitty.com
I really love the motion look in this image, this is why I chose it. I also like the lighting in this image. They have used a slow shutter speed on this image to make the motion of the bus blur. I think this is a good effect and makes the image loook intresting.

flickriver.com

This is another version of the slow shutter speed photography. I really like this as it is simple. I like the lightin in the image as one side is white, and other red from the car lights.

carbon.org.uk

Here is another over look at a motorway, showing the lights blurred. I really like this effect, and think this is a great image. I prefer this one thean the one above as this has more action, more lighting, and the background of the sky looks very beautiful. This image can say how the cars are pollution the world, although they can also be seen as beauty.

Research - Environmental Images

forloveofwater.co.za
I choose this as this is very simular of where I live. I think this could be croped, although this is the type of water waste I will be looking at, when taking images of my own.

thewaterq.com

This is a great image to find, as this is exactly what I wanted to show in my magazine. I wanted to show the beauty of the sourrounding area, although the heavely polluted destruction around it.

kidcyber.com.au
This is another good image to show what water pollution is. It is items, rubbish generaly that are throwninto water, like this. This will then start to decompose very slowly, and will give off bad gases, that can damage the earth. This will also ruin habbitat life, and could kill any wildlfe.

Research - Double Page Spread

I am going to look at existing double page spreads, to see how they have created their own magazine layouts. This will help me get ideas, and to see how it would look on the positioning of the layout. For the first couple of double page spreads, I will just be looking at layouts in general, although later I will be looking at layouts to do with my subject I'm looking at, to see what layouts and designs they have used.

wordpress.com
As I was looking, this one immediately had my attention, because this is a simple but a nicely laid out design. I really like that there is one image covering most of one page, I think this looks really effective, and looks professional. I also like the white background, as this goes very well with the layout.

childreninscotland.org.uk

With this layout, I find to busy, although I choose this, because of a few aspects in this layout that I liked. For example the row of images at the bottom of the article, I like this idea. Also the large title, although I think there is too much information given on one page.

abiodunakambi.blogspot.com

I chose this layout, as this image is show over both pages of the double page spread, although the main area of the image is on the right side of the page. The left page gives information, and title. I think this is a effective layout, and will keep this in mind. I don't think I will be able to do this with my images as mine will be landscapes and pollution.

flickr.com

I really love this layout, as this is a simple layout. I like how they have shown the images. I think this is a good layout, and will keep this one in mind for when I am creating my own layout.

blogspot.com

Here is another example of what the layout looks like when the image is stretched over both pages on the double page spread. I think this looks very good, and very effective. I would like to try this on one of my layouts to see how it would come out.

blogspot.com

Here is another strange example of a double page spread. I think this looks good and unusual. This is defiantly a modern take on a double page spread which looks interesting. I like how the writing is curved with the graphics on the page. I find that images that are brought over, spreading on to two pages looks very effective.

nearfield.org

I like this layout, as I think it looks simple but effective. The image again is over two pages which makes it look interesting, also bringing more detail in the image. I think the writing on the left side of the page looks effective, this is because of the font, and speech marks they used at the beginning.

Seeing these layouts, they choose light, washed out colours on their magazines. I think I should keep with the design, as I think this makes the magazines more interesting and professional. These layouts, will defiantly help me with my own double page spreads, and will give me good ideas, on how to create my own layout. Also adding aspects from two different magazines will make great double page spread, which I will try. Unfortunately I couldn't find any double page spreads on pollution or pollution in general. I could only find articles, which were laid out as a blog.

Research - Photos

Here I am going to show you my photos that I have taken for pollution. Most of the photos are about air pollution (Power Station) and waste. I wanted to do this as I thought that this would be an interesting topic to do. I also thought that I could get quite a few good images, which will make my magazine double page spread attractive.

My Photos consisted of:
- Grassland
- Mud
- Waste
- Powerstations
- Factories
- Damage
- Fields
- Wasteland
- Beauty
- Disgust

I have taken more photos, although the reason why I have not shown them to you is because some are of the same image, just different settings on the camera. I think these images are really good, and will be very useful to me on designing my magazine. There are some really great images in here, and I hope to make a design that will drag the image across both pages.

Similar to my researched images, I have also taken images of powerstations and waste. I think these are the most general polluted areas of the world. I also wanted to take images that were beautiful, as you look on one side of the park, and you are presented with beauty, look the other side and it is disgust, and pollution. I wanted to show this in my magazine.

Design's: First Double Page

These images below are my designs that I created from my own images. I have four designs that I created for the front double page spread. I thought of a large image front cover, so for the first design I spread my image over the whole of the first page. On the second page I then added other smaller images, and information on what my article was about. I added a black border around the images as this made them stand out, and this looked more presentable to the viewer when reading.
I added the title of the magazine at the top left of the page, followed by what my article is about. This design was slightly inspired by this magazine cover by having the first image spread over the whole of the first page. [link]. For the second page I didn't want it to become overcrowded with images, and writing, as I knew that I had another double page spread to crate, in which the writing could continue.

I like this design as it is simple, and the front cover is attractive which will encourage people to come over and have a look. At the moment I have just added placeholder text, although you will see my final piece with the added text.

For my second design, I had a similar thought to the first one, although cropping two images, and spreading them across the whole two pages. Including the title in the middle of the magazine. I thought of something immediately of why I will not choose this design. People may get confused when seeing this magazine wondering if this is the magazine title, or the article title. I thin this was a good design, although needs some more thought into the design and layout. I created a second version of this design which has my added thoughts to make this design more easier to read, and to make it become clearer for the viewer.

This is my third design of the previous version. I thought that this was a good design, although just needed tweaking on the layout, to make this easier, and clearer for the reader/viewer. I have the title of the magazine in large, but only placed on the left page, and in small the article, and author on the right page. I thin this looks much better, as this is more presentable to the viewer, and also have a great effect with the two contrasting images.

This is my fourth design that I created for the front double page spread. Experimenting with the second, and third design I created this one to see how it would look with just one image spread across the whole two pages. The image I choose was a picture that had a contrast within the image instead of using two completely different images. On the left page it shows a beautiful landscape/park with bright trees/grass and full of wildlife, although on the right page in the distance you see a horrible grey powerstation, that is full of pollution. Just before this you see the disgusting dirty water from the powerstation. I think this is one of my best images, as it shows so much in the image. I didn't want the image to cover the whole page, so I cropped it down, so a white border would appear around the image. At the top of the image I created a black banner that runs over both pages giving the title of the magazine, title of the article, and the author on it. I think this is one of my best front double page spreads, as this looks interesting with the image, and the layout is not too cluttered or busy. I think this will entice the reader to come over and look at the magazine. This type of design I was inspired by my research images. There was quite a few magazine covers that had a image spread across the whole of the double page spread. I had done the same, although added my own style to the magazine as well; white border, and black banner.

Design's: Second Double Page

This is where most of my information will be placed, as the first double page spread is to get the viewers attention, and give a little general information about the article. I have continued to have inspiration from other magazines on how to layout out my own. Also this will give me some good, and some bad result, because they layout also depends on what subject you are doing. A very graphic look to my layout will not work, as I am doing pollution. Also colours is a major point in the designing area.

For my first design I again got inspired by this magazine layout [link]. I like how one image shows the most detail in the magazine, and then on the other page give the information and smaller images to show the information's points. I have also added the title of the magazine at the top right of the page, as I wanted people to know what the magazine title was even thought out the magazine. I thought that this made the first page look professional. For the image on the first page, i cropped the image at the bottom so it would fit better on the page I also cropped it from the left side of the image, as this would then fit that page better, and look more attractive. In this layout I have designed it in such a way that this one image would show how the park is an attractive place. With the other three smaller images on the second page shows what it looks like around the park. Around the three smaller images I have added a black border to outline them, and make them stand out. This contrast is what I was aiming for within my magazine. I think this is a good layout, and will possible be a final piece.

This is my second design for the inside of the double page spread magazine. I wanted to completely go another direction to widen my layouts, and so that I have a wider range of choice when coming to my final piece. This design is slightly more busy than the previous design, as there is more images, and more areas or writing. Even though it is a little busy on the second page I really like this design. I like the colour of the background, as this is unusual and different. I don't think I will be using this design in my final piece because the layout is too crowded, and busy. The rows on images was inspired by my research of this image [link]. The small images were to show a contrast between the beautiful, and the pollution. The top row shows all the pollution and waste, showing how polluted the area is, although the bottom row shows how the park is beautiful, although will probably soon be run over by the pollution.

This was one of my own ideas that I wanted to see how it looked. I think this looks really great, I love how the one image is spread right along both pages, although cropped to the main focus point. Also I think the three columns of writing looks profession under the huge banner from the image. I added the title of the magazine at the top right to say that this is ownership of Photography Now. I also added in page numbers at the bottom of each corner. I think this is a brilliant layout, and I think it looks simple but effective.

Design four was just to try out a few of my own layouts, I don't think this worked out as well as other designs; this is because of page four; with the small images. This has made the layout look messy, and not laided out well. I like the black banner across both of the pages at the top of the magazine, I think this looks effective, and has made the magazine look professional. Again on page four the columns of writing do not flow with the rest of the layout. My favourite part is the black banner giving information of the magazine, article, and author. I also like the little break at the every beginning of the black banner.

Design five, is another version of the previous design. I thought that I could layout the magazine better, as I think this layout has potential. I changed the height of the columns on page four, as I think this has made the layout look less busy, and also made the layout look more presentable. I have also added page numbers at the bottom of the magazine, also adding the small black break, as I think this makes the layout look interesting. The banner was inspired from this magazine [link]. I added my own effect to the beginning of the banner with the small break.

Final Design

Here is my final design for the two double page spreads. The first double page spread is this design:

I choose this one, as I thought that this is the layout that portrayed by points across the most. My point was the contrast between the pollution and beauty. The two images are in the same area, you simply turn around to see the disgusting powerstation, and polluted areas, and the other side is a lush grass, field with lots of bright colour. Another thing I like about the photos, is that the beauty image has bright blue sky, although the polluted image has a grey storm look to it, also showing what is good, and what is bad. I think the layout of this magazine is really good, because it shows my points with two long striped images. Also in the middle you see the large title saying the name of the magazine called 'Photography Now', and I decided to add the think black banner across saying the article, and the authors name.

Here is my final design for the two double page spreads. The second double page spread is this design:

I choose this design, as I think that this as the greatest effect when looking at the layout. It is simple, easy to look at, and no clutter. I think this is a great layout, and I really like the images used in the layout. I think they really show the reader what my points are. I think the writing is neat, font type I choose was calibri as I thought that this was clear, and easy to read. I have wrote 324 words which is in the 200-400 word limit. I think the way I ended the article with Photography Now, Environment, Pollution, Scott Vincent looks professional and neat. I think this is the most simple design, although interesting. I have followed up with some ideas from my research like the image taking one whole page. I think this is effective, and you can compare with the other images.
